The Big Academic Drama Theatre named after G.A. Tovstonogov
(The former "Emperor's Theatre on Fontanka river).

The theatre was created in 1919 and started to perform in the Conservatiore Hall. In 1920 the theatre moved to Fontanka emb., 65 into the building of the former Suvorinsky (Maliy) Theatre, and since that time the BDT is located there. The idea if BDT founders was to create a theatre of "classic tragedy, romantic drama and high comedy". Schiller, Shakespear, Mollierre, etc., by the middle 20s the repertoire consisted plays by contemporary playwrights M.Gorky, N.Pogodin, A.Faiko, Y.Olesha, B.Lavrenev. In the years of the Great Patriotic War the Theatre was evacuated, but right after the blocade returned to Leningrad with the first train. The first post-war decade was full of hardships. In 1956 Tovstonogov became head of the Teatre, and his talent and work resulted in the Theatre's world-wide fame and popularity. In 1965 the Theatre was entitled Academic.
