Musorgsky Opera and Ballet Theatre

The Maly (Minor) Opera and Ballet Theatre was opened on November 8,1833 in the Art Square. The building of the theatre was erected by architect A.Bryullov. In 1926 the Theatre was named the Leningradsky Academic Maly Opera Theatre. For the latest twenty years the ballet company of the Theatre is headed by a Russian People’s Artist Boyarchikov. He made it a highly proficient authorial theatre. Under his management the Theatre switched to the modern trends in the opera art. Its performances touch mainly the contemporary problems but in a new originative way. Nevertheless, the Theatre holds to the great traditions of classic opera, especially the Russian one. Today its repertoire includes works by Chaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin, Musorgsky, as well as Verdi, Puccini, Mozart and Straus.
