THEATERN UND KONZERTHALLEN
SANKT PETERSBURG
Grand Philharmonic
Hall named after D.D. Shostakovitch
Philharmonic
is the oldest one in Russia. Its history began in 1802 with the foundation
of the Saint-Petersburg Philharmonic Society. In a few years the Society won
a great popularity within the country. The world-wide fame came in 1824 with
the triumphant world premiere of the “Missa Solemnis” by Beethoven. The Philharmonic
orchestra itself was founded in 1882 and soon was acknowledged the best Court
orchestra in the Empire. On October, 1917 its name was changed for the State
Orchestra and up to these days it remains the best in the country. Today the
Saint-Petersburg Philharmonic is the city’s citadel of classic music, both
symphonic and chamber. While the Shostakovich Grand Hall is dedicated to symphonic
music, in the Glinka Small Hall the chamber music is played.
The Shostakovich Grand Philharmonic Hall was opened on July, 1921. It got
the former Noblemen’s Assembly building constructed at the corner of the Mikhailovskaya
Street in 1837 – 1839. The Noblemen’s Assembly building itself had been the
greatest and one of the most popular concert halls in the city. The most distinguished
West-European musicians and greatest composers, such as Wagner, Liszt, Schumann,
Berlioz, Maler, Rubinstein and many others gave their concerts and performed
their renowned works in the White Columns Hall. Works by great Russian classics,
such as Chaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Musorgsky, Glazunov, Borodin were premiered
in the Hall of White Columns as well.
